Stop Operation, NASA Aircraft rentals for Exhibition

Sunday, July 11, 2010

- In a matter of months, the planes used in outer space by NASA will begin to 'retire'. American Space Agency is thinking of 'giving away' the existing aircraft.

NASA has some fitting place to show these planes, one day when these institutions are no longer operating. Able in schools, science museums or other organizations interested in building show one of three existing aircraft.

NASA predicts, it takes approximately USD42 million fund to restore the aircraft is such that the proper display. The fund would also include the cost to bring the plane down to the place in question.

In addition, approximately $ 6 million funding is also needed to modify the functioning jumbo jet carrying the space shuttle to the nearest airport. But those costs could be higher depending on how far away the airport exhibition place.

"Unfortunately, these spacecraft can not be changed as a transportation or storage," NASA said, as quoted by the Associated Press, Thursday (18/12/2008).

Reportedly, one of the three aircraft had been moved to two places at the exhibition, to be precise at the Smithsonian Institutions National Air and Space Museum in Washington. Meanwhile, two other planes will still be occupying the Kennedy Space Center.

However, if the cost of renting a space shuttle to the exhibition is considered too expensive, NASA offered a major engine for the aircraft is on display only until USD800.000 USD400.000 price, excluding shipping charges.

This step should really think of NASA as at 30 September 2010, this institution will retire all of its aircraft, either the Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour, following the policies of President George W Bush to return astronauts to call them on 2020.

But the government of President Obama is expected to review the policy, including the possibility of letting NASA still flying the aircraft after 2010. (Srn) (jri)
